Groundnut
Tubers for propagation
Apios americana
The Groundnut is a perennial vine with edible tubers similar to a potato but with three times the protein. The tubers were a staple food of indigenous people of the Americas. The groundnut will spread, so it’s best to give it something to climb. It is often found along river banks climbing trees and shrubs. Yields are not that big—nowhere near the abundance of sunchokes—but we’re not too concerned. Groundnuts like warm summers and plenty of water. They generally need two growing seasons—maybe even three—to size up and become decent-sized tubers. We plan to experiment by interplanting with sunchokes so the groundnut can climb the stalks and the two can be harvested at the same time—potentially both on two-year cycles.
You will receive at least 5 tubers for planting. We are offering a mix of groundnuts originally from Oikos Tree Crops, Fedco, OSU breeding program, and ‘Billington’ source.
