Cornus mas

Cornelian cherry is a shrub or small tree in the Dogwood family grown for its ornamental value, tart, juicy fruits, and very dense wood (so dense it sinks in water!). It flowers very early in the season, providing much needed food for bees, and it apparently grows well in heavy clay soils. The seed takes multiple years to germinate, and its growth has been slow for us, so these seedlings are the result of a lot of patience. We’re offering two-year-old seedlings from ‘Redstone’ parents. This cultivar, “created by the USDA, is celebrated for its exceptional yield, cold hardiness, and its status as the latest blooming and earliest ripening among its peers” (Sheffield’s Seed). Cornelian cherries have both male and female parts and can self-pollinate, but will yield more with multiple plants. Hardy to zones 4-8.
